What Is DIEP Breast Reconstruction?

DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap breast reconstruction is a microsurgical procedure that uses your own abdominal skin and fat to reconstruct one or both breasts after mastectomy. Can both breasts be reconstructed with DIEP flap?

Yes, it is possible to reconstruct both breasts using DIEP flap surgery, either in a single operation (bilateral reconstruction) or over two stages. The amount of available abdominal tissue largely determines whether one or both breasts can be reconstructed at the same time. Your surgeon will assess this during your consultation.

Yes, DIEP flap surgery leaves a scar across the lower abdomen, similar to a tummy tuck scar. Surgeons place the incision low enough to be hidden beneath underwear or swimwear. Over time, with good care, most abdominal scars fade significantly, although some degree of visible scarring should be expected as a normal part of healing.

DIEP flap breast reconstruction often provides a more natural look, feel and movement compared to implants. It also avoids implant-related risks such as rupture or capsular contracture. However, the best choice depends on individual anatomy, recovery goals and medical history, making a personal consultation essential to determine the most appropriate option.

DIEP breast reconstruction is often a preferred option after radiation therapy, as it brings healthy, vascularised tissue to the chest area. This can help improve the quality of the skin and support better healing. However, prior radiation may slightly increase the risk of healing complications, which will be considered during surgical planning.
